Westgate Bridge Experience Oil on canvas, 3m x 1m
Nicholas Scapoulos, director of Nicholas Scott Real Estate, commissioned a painting of the Westgate Bridge, the most significant landmark of the western suburbs of Melbourne, his main sales area.
Mr Scapoulos says: “Our business vision is brilliantly captured in Catherine van Wilgenburg’s oil painting ‘The Westgate Bridge Experience’. This commissioned art work has great visual impact, featuring familiar landmarks of the area such as the Westgate Bridge, the Maribyrnong River and the Sun Theatre. The painting bridges the old look of Yarraville urban landscape with contemporary design, mirroring the changes in demographics and property renovations. New residents are now becoming concerned with visibility, simplicity in design and the interconnection between people and business.”

Nicholas Scapoulos renovated his premises using large plate glass windows on the street façade. This glass expanse opens directly into the Meeting Room. The visual impact of this building design is intensified by Catherine van Wilgenburg’s painting. It becomes an icon for the business vision. It is dynamic and colourful for both clients and staff. Everybody becomes aware of the uplifting and energising quality of the painting that enhances the total atmosphere of the office environment. This painting is not just decoration – it has been created with a complete business vision in mind from the mission statement to the corporate image.
At night the vibrant colours in the work, illuminated by spotlights, produce an amazing visual impact. It makes you stop in your tracks to study the intensity of the application of colour onto the canvas. After viewing the work for a time, you realise there is a subtle juxtaposition of the treatment and placement of the colours.
For Yarraville painter Catherine van Wilgenburg, this connection is integral to her own business, Living Colour Studio, an Architecture, Building Colour consultancy and Art Commission practice.
Nicholas Scott commissioned Catherine to produce the work, thereby creating an important link between local business and the arts. He wanted an image reminiscent of Yarraville that would also create a dynamic initial impression when clients walk into the building.
An original artwork responding to specific site requirements adds a unique quality to the identity of a business in the marketplace.
Nicholas Scott Real Estate is located at 100 Somerville Rd, Yarraville, Victoria.
