Her art brings colour into the foreground as a visual language. She speaks the Rainbow. She talks the visual language of colour. One red speaks in textures and gestures differently from another red. Yellows needs different treatment.
She is focussed on colour as one of the pathways of seeing. Since the Renaissance, there has been a focus on form and a conflict between form and colour. Catherine is involved in rediscovering the language of colour and how it influences the way we see the world and how form arises through colour.
Her works are unique; they are about the language of colour itself—how one red speaks in textures and gestures differently from another red. Colour always works in opposites—in paradox and contradiction. It's never one colour, because each colour only exists with its opposite. Colour has its own life. It's the way in which the different hues are worked that forms the image. They speak in colour, about colour. They breathe the Spirit of Place into the bones of a building.
This is not just decorative art. These are not paintings made to match the furniture! Catherine's art places colour in the centre of the total environment, not as an afterthought to the structure.
