McArthur Residence, West Footscray

Originally the house was placed on the block with no regard for orientation. Neither was there any consideration for the separation of room functions or relationship with the outdoors. It was cold in winter and hot in summer and dark inside except for the lounge room on the north side.

A complete makeover was required reversing the floor plan so that the living areas faced north, south and east with the north living areas to catch the winter sun and with south facing living and outdoor areas for the summer. The bedrooms and bathrooms are tucked away from the living areas by a passage. Separate living and sleeping areas create flexible noise and heating control.
From the owners:
Dear Hans,
We wanted to express our appreciation for the work you have done towards designing our renovations. We have been living in the house now for 10 months and we are enjoying living in the space you have created for us. You have created a wonderful link between the existing part of the house and the newly extended section and the amount and use of light and sense of space created in the house has given it a completely new feel.

We also benefited from your network of like-minded professionals via your recommendation to our builder who also added to the positive experience of turning our house from a dark, cold/hot, pokey space into a light-filled, appropriately heated home.

We have often commented that the investment we made with yourself and Living Colour Studio is the best investment we made throughout the entire project and feel that the success we have achieved in the renovation is largely down to the design process with you.
Thanks you again and we would not hesitate in recommending your services to other prospective renovators/home builders.
Best regards
Andrew and Sam McArthur
